13.3a Identify key pieces of legislation that relate to moving and assisting

As part of your role, you may have to move and assist people or move and handle objects. There are laws that specifically apply to these tasks, mainly, three pieces of legislation that we have already covered in a previous section. These are:

• The Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992-covers how to transport or support any load safely and prevent injury.
• The Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations (PUWER) 2002-sets out how any type of equipment is to be used safely and maintained.
• The Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998 (LOLER)-sets out specific requirements relating to work equipment which is used for lifting and lowering people or loads.

You should familiarise yourself with these pieces of legislation as your role will more than likely involve moving and handling objects and people at some point.
