8.1b Explain the importance of good nutrition and hydration in maintaining health and wellbeing

For our bodies to be healthy and work properly, we need to have good nutrition and hydration. This involves getting the right balance of carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals, fibre and protein, as well as making sure that we drink plenty of fluids.

If you do not have the right balance of these nutrients in your diet, it can lead to ill-health and affect your life in a negative way. Therefore, it is important that you make sure the individuals you care for are getting the right balance of nutrients in their diet so that their body can function properly.

The government have developed an ‘eatwell plate‘ to illustrate what is needed in a healthy diet. You should use it as a guide when preparing food for an individual. You should also make sure that any individuals you care for are drinking 1.5-2 litres of fluid each day unless they are not able to because of an upcoming operation. This will help them maintain good nutrition and improve their health and well-being.
