9.2a. Explain how positive attitudes towards those with mental health conditions, dementia or learning disabilities will improve the care and support they receive

There is a lot of stigma around mental health, dementia and learning disabilities which can lead to individuals feeling like they’re lonely and being left out of society. However, if you focus on the abilities and skills that someone has, you can support them to live well and live with their condition in a positive way. Therefore, it is important that you demonstrate a positive attitude towards those living with a condition.

There are several ways you can do this. For example, if you make sure an individual does not feel isolated in a social situation, it will reduce their stigma. You could also identify and build on an individual’s skills so they still feel capable and independent despite their condition. Promoting the individual’s well-being is also a good way to promote positive attitudes.

By doing these these things, you can improve the care and support an individual receives regardless of any conditions they may have and make them feel better about themselves. Therefore, you should promote positive attitudes whenever possible.
