Explain how and when to seek advice about confidentiality

Qualification: Level 2 Diploma in Adult Care
Unit name: Communication in Care Settings
Learning outcome: 4. Be able to apply principles and practices relating to confidentiality at work
Assessment criteria: 4.4 Explain how and when to seek advice about confidentiality

There may be occasions when you need to seek advice about confidentiality.

For example, if you receive a phone call from an individual’s sibling asking for information about their medication, you may be unsure whether or not they are authorised to be given this information. You could handle this by explaining that you would need to check, so will call them back later, which would give you time to seek advice.

You should refer to your own organisation’s agreed ways of working for information about policies and procedures relating to confidentiality. You can also seek guidance from your manager who will have the experience to support you with these responsibilities.
