Hazardous substances and materials in the workplace can potentially cause adverse health effects if stored or used incorrectly. They can include:
- Cleaning products such as bleach and detergents
- Bodily fluids such as vomit or faeces
- Soiled linen such as bedding or clothing
- Dust
- Fumes
- Medication
They are regulated by the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002. This is often abbreviated to COSHH.
It is important to read the warning labels and instructions for use on such substances and materials and use them in line with your employer’s agreed ways of working to ensure the safety of yourself and others.
It is essential that you store, use and dispose of these substances and materials correctly.
