Unit name: Safeguarding and Protection in Care Settings
Learning outcome: 3. Know how to respond to suspected or alleged abuse
Assessment criteria: 3.1 Explain the actions to take if there are suspicions that an individual is being abused

If you have concerns that an individual is being abused, you should:

  1. Follow your employer’s safeguarding policy and procedure
  2. Report your concerns immediately to the designated person (usually your manager)
  3. Make a written record of your concerns

Even if you are unsure if abuse is occurring, you should still have a discussion with your manager about it – this is an important part of your duty of care towards the individuals that you care for.

If your concerns are not dealt with correctly by your manager, you should escalate your concerns, using your employer’s whistleblowing policy and procedure as guidance.
