Unit name: Implement person-centred approaches in care settings
Learning outcome: 5. Be able to support the individual’s right to make choices
Assessment criteria: 5.4 Describe how to support an individual to question or challenge decisions concerning them that are made by others
Sometimes an individual may have decisions made about them by others that they do not agree with and so require support to question or challenge them.
As a lead care worker, you have a duty to uphold the individual’s rights and support them with this. They may not understand their rights, feel that their own views have not been valued or respected or not have the confidence to speak up for themselves.
You could help them to look at their options, which could include getting an independent advocate to speak up on their behalf, getting a second opinion or making a complaint.
