The Early Years Foundation Stage Statutory Framework sets out the requirements for food and drink in early years settings.

Providers must ensure that meals, snacks and drinks are healthy, balanced and nutritious, and that special dietary requirements, allergies and preferences are taken into account.

Fresh drinking water must be accessible to children at all times, and suitable facilities must be available for the hygienic preparation of food. In addition, all staff that will be responsible for the preparations of food must be undergo food safety and hygiene training.
