Unit 1.6: Understand the needs of the mother and baby during pre-conception, pregnancy and the first year of life

This unit is part of the NCFE CACHE Level 3 Diploma for the Early Years Educator and has the following learning outcomes and assessment criteria:

The unit provides the learner with the knowledge and understanding of pre-conceptual care; pregnancy; and health and developmental checks during the first year of life.

  1. Understand development from conception to end of gestation
    1. Describe stages of development from fertilisation to end of gestation
    2. Describe antenatal developmental checks
    3. Identify actions to take in response to outcomes of antenatal developmental checks
  2. Understand the potential effects on development of preconception, pre-birth and birth experiences
    1. Explain the potential effects on development of: pre-conception experiences, pre-birth experiences, birth experiences
  3. Understand postnatal care
    1. Describe post-natal care for: mother, baby
    2. Describe concerns parents may have following the birth of a baby
    3. Identify sources of support for parents following the birth of a baby
  4. Understand developmental checks from birth to 12 months
    1. Explain routine checks carried out for: the newborn, the baby during the first year of life
