Learning outcome: Understand legislation and guidelines for health and safety
Assessment criteria: Describe procedures for: registration of children, collection of children

All Early Years organisations will have policies and procedures relating to registering and collecting children to and from the settings.

All children must be registered when they enter the setting. This ensures that there is a record of the children that are in the setting, which can be used in the event of evacuation to ensure that all children are accounted for. The registration record is also useful for other activities, such as billing.

The collection policy and procedure are used to ensure that children may only be collected by their parents/carers or named persons that their parents/carers have permitted. During collection, Early Years practitioners will do a handover with the parent/carer to let them know about their child’s activity during the day and any concerns that may have been observed. When a child leaves, the register will be updated to reflect this.
