This unit is part of the NCFE CACHE Level 3 Diploma for the Early Years Educator and has the following learning outcomes and assessment criteria:
- Understand the language and communication needs of children
- Understand the characteristics of a language rich environment
- Be able to support children’s language and communication needs
- Understand strategies which support emergent literacy
- Explain strategies to support the development of emergent literacy in relation to current frameworks
- Explain the use of systematic synthetic phonics in the teaching of reading
- Describe how the Early Years practitioner provides opportunities for sustained shared thinking to support children’s emergent literacy
- Be able to plan activities to support emergent literacy
- Be able to lead activities which support emergent literacy
- Be able to review how planned activities support emergent literacy
- Be able to work with parents/carers in a way which encourages them to take an active role in their child’s play, learning and development
