Unit 3.9: Facilitate the cognitive development of children

This unit is part of the NCFE CACHE Level 3 Diploma for the Early Years Educator and has the following learning outcomes and assessment criteria:

  1. Understand about cognitive development in children
    1. Describe sensory development in the first year of life
    2. Identify stages of cognitive development in children from birth to 7 years
    3. Summarise current scientific research relating to neurological and brain development in Early Years
    4. Explain how current scientific research relating to neurological and brain development in Early Years influences practice in Early Years settings
  2. Understand theory underpinning cognitive development
    1. Describe theoretical perspectives in relation to cognitive development
    2. Analyse how theoretical perspectives in relation to cognitive development impact on current practice
  3. Be able to facilitate the development of cognition in children
    1. Describe the role of the Early Years practitioner when facilitating the development of cognition in children
    2. Analyse the use of technology in supporting the development of cognition in children
    3. Create an environment which facilitates cognitive development of children in own setting
  4. Be able to implement a learning experience which supports the development of sustained shared thinking in children
    1. Plan a learning experience which supports the development of sustained shared thinking in children aged: 0-1 year 11 months, 2-2 years 11 months, 3-5 years
    2. Lead a learning experience which supports the development of sustained shared thinking in children aged: 0-1 year 11 months, 2-2 years 11 months, 3-5 years
