Qualification: Level 2 Diploma in Care, Level 3 Diploma in Adult Care
Unit name: Safeguarding and Protection in Care Settings
Learning outcome: 1. Understand principles of safeguarding adults
Assessment criteria: 1.4 Describe harm

‘Harm’ usually refers to damage that is caused deliberately and can be broadly split into four categories:

  • Physical harm such as cuts, bruises, burns and broken bones
  • Psychological harm such as fear and distress
  • Misappropriation such as theft or scamming
  • Self-harm

Adults that receive care services are often more vulnerable to harm and so measures should be taken to ensure their welfare.
