5.6c Support and encourage individuals own sense of identity and self-esteem

In order to promote an individual’s sense of identity, well-being and self-esteem, they need to be happy with as many aspects of their life as possible. One of the ways you can do this is to look at how your own attitudes and behaviours can promote their well-being as covered in the previous section. However, there are other things you can do as well.

If an individual thinks that something would help them to feel better, you should listen to what they have to say. Be positive, understanding, empathic and non-judgemental. You should encourage them to share their thoughts, and support whatever they may suggest. Help them to make the changes they want, such as helping them join in with particular activities or groups

However, do not assume that an individual has the same spiritual or ethical outlook as you or their friends and family. They may not necessarily want to join in with the same practices or activities. Keep all of this in mind, and you will be successful in improving the individual’s well-being.
