9.6a Explain what is meant by the term “capacity”.

A person’s “capacity” or “mental capacity” is their ability to make their own decisions. An individual who does not have capacity is unable to understand information or make an informed decision based on that information. You should assume any individuals you care for have capacity unless an assessment proves otherwise. We will go over why this is so important in the next section.
